Game Seven - Stockport (Cup) Home

12th August 2008

After the successful start to the season, we prepared for the second game and a cup match with newly promoted Stockport County. Awful cup draw but I suppose we've been fortunate with trips to Forest, Fulham, Villa and Chelsea in previous seasons.

So, the first evening game and you can see that not many people seemed interested in going as only the West Stand was opened to City fans and a "speckling" of away fans making the trip.

The trouble makers turned up though and young Ched felt the wrath of a female steward for having the nerve of crossing the boundary into the kop! Living on the edge that one!

The game itself was pretty much uneventful. Stockport had a couple of chances to take an early lead but then found themselves on the back foot when they have a player sent off after 18 minutes for a foul of Steve Howard when he was clean through on goal. From then on, City controlled the game and it was only a matter of time before we took the lead. A Joe Mattock cross/shot found Howard who just poked it into the net from close in.

From then on there only looked to be one winner as City pressed forward looking for the second goal that would seal the game. The only downside was a poor tackle on Mattock resulting in ligament damage to the young lad who will now be out for a couple of months!

And so that was Stockport. Not much to report but was a fun evening sitting with a few of the FoxesTalk lot and at the end of the day, we got through to the next round and that's the most important thing and resulted in an away date with Fulham later this month.

Next stop: A return match with Stockport at Edgley Park! That's when the adventures really start!
